How to create and remove prescriptions for patients

Clinicians can prescribe medication to their patients when they create consultation notes.

Note: To prescribe medication to a patient, you must have a role assigned to you that gives you editing permissions for Patients and Consultations. For more information on roles, see here.

In this article:


Create a Prescription

You can prescribe medication to a patient at any time:

1. Go to the Patients page.

2. Select the patient who you want to prescribe medication for.

3. Go to the Consultations tab.

4. Click New.

5. Fill in the basic details of the consultation notes.

  • Consultation type: Use the dropdown menu to choose the type of consultation

  • Date: Select the date that you want to link the prescription to

  • Note type: Use the dropdown menu to select a consultation note template, or Free notes

6. Click the Medication tag at the bottom.

7. Fill in the details for the prescription.

  • Medication: Type and select the medication you want to prescribe

  • Dosage: Type the dosage

  • Quantity: How much or how many tablets to prescribe

  • Comments: Type any additional comments that you want to appear on the prescription

  • Show in Summary: Tick this box if you want this prescription to appear on the patient's Summary page

8. Complete the rest of the consultation notes as required.

9. Click Save at the bottom of the page.

The prescription appears in the patient's Consultations tab.

10. Select the consultation notes that contain the prescription.

11. Click Create prescription.

12. Select the practice location that you want to link the prescription to.

You are redirected to the Prescriptions tab, and the prescription is added to the patient's record.


Remove a Prescription

You can remove a prescription from a patient at any time:

1. Go to the Patients page.

2. Select the patient who you want to remove a prescription for.

3. Go to the Prescriptions tab.

4. Click the more options icon next to the prescription that you want to remove.

5. Select Delete.

6. Confirm the deletion.

The prescription is removed from the patient's record.
