How to label a medication as a controlled drug

You can record the prescription of a controlled drug when you create a consultation note.

Note: To create prescriptions, you must have a role assigned to you that gives you editing permissions for Patients and Prescriptions. For more information on roles, see here.

What is a controlled drug

Controlled drugs are medications that are regulated under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 due to their potential for abuse and addiction. These include drugs such as morphine, oxycodone, and certain stimulants.


How can I prescribe controlled drugs

At the moment, controlled drugs cannot be prescribed within Semble. This restriction is in place to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.


Record a controlled drug

To record the prescription of a controlled drug:

1. Start creating a prescription as you normally would. For more information on how to do this, see here.

2. Select the Medication tag at the bottom of the consultation note.

3. Enter the name of the medication, the dosage, the quantity, and any other comments about it. A warning appears on the right-hand side to say that the medication is a 'Controlled drug' :

4. Finish creating the consultation note.

The medication will appear in the Consultations tab in the patient's record, with a red warning showing that it is a 'Controlled drug' :

Note: Controlled drugs must be prescribed outside of Semble.
